Bruce Springsteen rocked London’s Hyde Park on July 6 and unlike the last time he visited the fabled grounds, this time there was no drama.
More than a decade ago, Springsteen was playing the British park — famous for hosting the likes of Pink Floyd, T-Rex, Fleetwood Mac, and the Rolling Stones in the ’60s — and called Paul McCartney on stage to wrap up the night with a couple of Beatles songs.
Unfortunately the show had extended further than the officials had originally agreed to, and despite seeing Sir Paul harmonizing with The Boss on “Twist and Shout,” organizers cut off the sound to the audience and threatened to pull all the plugs if Springsteen added one more encore in his 29-song set.
“They told me it’s late, but they can’t throw us out of here now, can they?” Springsteen asked the 80,000 fans who had sung along with him for over three hours that July night in 2012. Springsteen’s stage manager ran up to him and said yes, yes they can, and they will.
Defiantly, and still clearly on a buzz of being able to play two Beatles tunes with one of his idols, Springsteen strapped on his trademark Telecaster and sang a few lines of Lead Belly’s “Goodnight Irene” and obeyed the authorities.
