The Cure smothered their fans at the kick off of their Kissing Tour with 11 live debuts on July 9, 1987, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Supporting the album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, the gig that night at the Expo Theater in downtown Vancity could have been nicknamed New Song, New Song, New Song. From the opening number through the second encore, Robert Smith and his suddenly merry men bombarded the Canucks with material from the recently released double album including one of their biggest hits, “Just Like Heaven.”
The 1980s were a plentiful decade for Smith and the Cure. From ’79-’89, the group released nine studio albums, 6 EPs, a box set, three compilations, and a live album.
So had The Cure peaked in creativity by ’87? Just the opposite. After releasing their still-wonderful greatest hits collection Standing On The Beach in ’86, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, was so chock full of fun, not only did it exceed the capacity of a double LP, but the track “Hey You!!!” wouldn’t even fit on the 74-minute CD. You had to buy the cassette to hear it.
