Umphrey’s McGee Honors Both Weezer & Buddy Holly in Live Debut

Umphrey’s McGee performed a delightful gig at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa on Friday (8/22), paying tribute to the venue’s storied past with thoughtful teases peppered among their setlist.

The prog jam band snuck in a hint of “Blackbird” by The Beatles in their 15-song set. The Beatles were famously influenced by Buddy Holly, who played his last concert at the Surf in 1959.

Silverstein formed 25 years ago in 2000 in Burlington, Ontario, Canada and quickly carved out a place in the post-hardcore scene. Their sound combined emo, hardcore, and melodic punk, marked by both heavy breakdowns and clear soaring choruses.

After a pair of early EPs, they signed with Victory Records (Thursday, Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday), and released their first full-length LP in 2003, When Broken Is Easily Fixed.

Today is Elvis Costello’s Birthday

Elvis Costello blasted onto the rock scene in 1977 with his debut album, My Aim Is True, recorded in London with members of the SF Bay Area band Clover.

In a few weeks Joe Perry will turn 75 years-old. The Aerosmith guitarist might not know what the future holds for that band, so in the meantime he's doing what he's done since 1979 when he briefly quit the Boston band: take his solo group on the road.

Over the years he has had a variety of frontmen: Ralph Morman (1979–1980), Charlie Farren (1980–1982), Mach Bell (1982–1983), Joe Perry himself (1983–1984, 2018–2019), Hagen Grohe (2009–2010), Gary Cherone (2022).

9:30 Club: Venue Spotlight

The 9:30 Club, arguably Washington, D.C.’s most important rock venue, opened on May 31, 1980, at 930 F Street NW, which is how it got its name.

Founded by entrepreneurs Dody DiSanto and Jon Bowers, the 199-capacity club—with its low ceilings and intimate vibe—quickly became the place for underground and alternative acts to play in the nation’s capital, helping D.C. become a hotbed for punk and new wave for those unwilling to brave New York City.

Today is Robert Plant’s Birthday

Today is Robert Plant’s Birthday

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page first met on a summer day much like today in 1968. The 19-year-old singer, with beautiful long locks and an even better voice, was tall (6'1"), slender, engaging, and arrived carrying a small collection of blues and folk records when he knocked on Page’s door in the affluent village of Pangbourne on the River Thames.

Page was five years his elder, but with a baby face, a sincere smile, and a pedigree as one of the go-to studio guitarists in London.
