The Who took the stage at the Isle of Wight Festival in the early hours of August 29, 1970, in front of one of the largest concert audiences in rock history. Impossible to know for sure, but estimates put the crowd between 600,000 and 700,000 people on the small island meant for 100k residents.
The ambitious festival was the brainchild of three brothers: Ron, Ray and Bill Foulk through Fiery Creations Ltd., who had already built a reputation with smaller events in 1968 and 1969.
Their goal in 1970 was to create a European answer to Woodstock. Thus The Who were joined by Chicago, The Doors, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, and Ten Years After.
