In two months The Who’s debut album, My Generation, will celebrate its 60th anniversary. The groundbreaking record that featured the classic “The Kids Are Alright” might be best known for the stuttering title track with the infamous line, “I hope I die before I get old.”
When interviewed in 1989 on Good Morning America, lyricist and guitarist Pete Townshend was asked what “old” meant and he responded with an answer that seems to have gotten lost over time.
“‘Old’ to me then was really ‘rich,'” he explained, dressed in a suit and tie. “Somebody that had achieved everything and looked at anybody on the ladder up with an eye to kick them off. So, I guess we’re old now.”
That confession, sarcastic or not, came 36 years ago as the band was preparing to head out on tour to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
